Australia warns of ‘high threat’ of terrorism in Mindanao
The Australian government warned its nationals against traveling to Mindanao, citing the “heightened” threat of terrorism in the region.
In a travel advisory dated March 25, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cautioned its nationals against travel to mainland Mindanao, Zamboanga peninsula and Sulu archipelago.
“We strongly advise you not to travel to mainland Mindanao, the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Sulu Archipelago regions of Mindanao, including Basilan, Jolo and Tawi-Tawi due to the very high threat of terrorist attack, including kidnapping and related counter-terrorism operations. In late March 2009, the Australian Embassy in Manila canceled a planned visit to Cotabato City in Mindanao due to heightened security concerns,” it said. (GMA)
