To convince not only the C.I.A., but the best spy agency in the Arab world, Jordan’s General Intelligence Directorate, that their agent was really working for the West showed superior trade craft. The Jordanian doctor, Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, who blew himself up along with a Jordanian and seven C.I.A. case officers, was fed just enough low-level information to keep the C.I.A. and G.I.D. interested and alive to the possibility that he could lead them into the very soul of jihad. Instead, in the classic double agent formula, he led them to their own destruction. “
